 To start my week off I met with my primary mentor Dr. Turner, where I created a questionnaire for perspective patients to fill out. The questionnaire asks general health questions along a few slightly more personal questions in order to allow Dr. Turner to have a little background knowledge on his patients. Due to legal reasons I'm not allowed officially sit in on his 1 on 1 conversations with patients, so instead he will then describe to me how his conversations begin to naturally flow, along with how he builds bonds his patients. When first getting a new patient he would begin the conversation by sharing small talk details and then branching to more positive subjects that would overall brighten the patients mood. After about 10 minutes of sharing positive experiences, they make their way into talking about the initial dilemma. He proceeds with his patients in this manner due to his #1 belief in psychiatry being that "you can't tell a person how to think, you can only help them change their way of thinking." This quote has resonated with me all week because it caused me to take a whole new way. It made me realize that even though I have had help getting through dark times in my life; it wasn't necessarily the people around me bringing me up, but them changing my mental from negative to positive
